Jails across Pakistan joined the nation in celebrating Independence Day, with inmates paying tribute to the sacrifices made by Muslims of the subcontinent for the creation of Pakistan. They also voiced appreciation for the Pakistan Armed Forces and their role in defending the country.

At Karachi Central Jail, preparations for both Independence Day and “Marka-e-Haq” were in full swing. The prison was decorated with bright lights, green crescent flags, and colourful buntings, while walls displayed patriotic slogans and messages of support for the army.

Jail Superintendent Abdul Karim Abbasi and other officials participated in the celebrations, which included Quran recitations, prayers for national prosperity, and sports activities for inmates.

In recent years, prison reforms by provincial governments have aimed to turn jails into centres of rehabilitation. The message “Hate crime, not the criminal” is prominently displayed at the entrance of Karachi Central Jail and other prisons in Sindh.

Alongside educational and vocational training programmes, jail authorities organise national and religious celebrations to bring positivity and hope into the daily lives of prisoners.
