Sarim Burney’s Bail Plea Rejected for Third Time in Human Trafficking Case

ISLAMABAD: A federal anti-corruption court has once again rejected the bail plea of social worker Sarim Burney, marking the third denial in an ongoing human trafficking case.

Burney, who was arrested in June 2024 from Karachi Airport, faces accusations of forging documents and illegally sending underage children abroad. Prosecutors argued that Burney, along with accomplices, manipulated official paperwork to facilitate child smuggling.

The court was informed that Burney has been in jail for nearly a year. About six weeks ago, the case was formally transferred to the federal anti-corruption court for trial.

Earlier, Burney’s bail applications had already been dismissed by a judicial magistrate and the High Court. Prosecutors stressed that the gravity of the charges and the alleged exploitation of children left no grounds for his release.

The case continues to highlight Pakistan’s growing struggle against human trafficking, where vulnerable children are often the most exploited victims.
