Experts have warned that ultra processed food is becoming a global threat and steps are needed to reduce its consumption.
According to global research, eating habits are changing. Instead of fresh foods, there is a rising trend of cheap and highly processed foods, which has increased the risk of obesity, depression, and chronic diseases.
According to research published in the renowned medical journal The Lancet, governments must take action by issuing warnings regarding ultra processed food and imposing higher taxes on it so that funds can be generated to improve access to nutritious food.
Ultra processed food is defined as food containing five ingredients that are not commonly used in households. These include emulsifiers used to combine basic ingredients such as oil and water, preservatives to keep food fresh for a longer time, additives used to make food safe and appealing, along with artificial colors and sweeteners.
Ultra processed foods include sausages, crisps, pastries, biscuits, instant soups, fizzy drinks, ice cream, and even supermarket bread.
It has also been found that industrially prepared foods are high in sugar and unhealthy fats while being low in fiber and protein.
Some scientists also state that the research does not conclusively prove that ultra processed food directly harms health, and further studies and trials are needed in this regard.
