Islamabad: The FIA Commercial Banking Circle Islamabad foiled an attempt to smuggle counterfeit Pakistani currency and arrested a bus driver in the operation. Officials recovered fake banknotes worth Rs4.5 million.
According to FIA authorities, a team conducted a raid near the M-1 Attock Toll Plaza on a tip-off and apprehended the bus driver, identified as Rawez Khan, a resident of Nowshera. During the search, the team seized 800 counterfeit currency notes of Rs5,000 denomination, amounting to Rs4 million. The suspect had skillfully concealed the fake notes inside his clothing while travelling from Peshawar to Multan.
Initial investigations revealed that the accused had been involved in counterfeit currency smuggling for several months. The network reportedly supplied fake notes through multiple carriers. Rawez Khan used to receive counterfeit currency from a rickshaw driver based in Peshawar and deliver it to an accomplice in Multan.
Officials added that the suspect received Rs2,000 as commission for every Rs100,000 worth of fake notes delivered. FIA sources confirmed that the accused had transported counterfeit currency to Multan on earlier occasions as well.
The FIA Commercial Banking Circle has expanded the scope of the investigation and launched raids to arrest other members of the network involved in manufacturing and distributing fake currency.
