(FILES) (COMBO) This combination of pictures created on November 7, 2024 shows Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (L) speaking after casting his ballot during the runoff presidential election in Tehran on July 5, 2024, and former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump waving at supporters at the end of a campaign rally at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 4, 2024. The UN nuclear watchdog said Israeli strikes on June 18 destroyed two buildings making centrifuge components for Iran's nuclear programme near Tehran, while Iran said it fired hypersonic missiles as the arch foes traded fire for a sixth day. WASHINGTON: The United States has deployed warships, fighter jets, and thousands of troops to the Middle East as President Donald Trump considers military action against Iran if no nuclear agreement is reached within days, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Officials say options range from limited strikes on Iran’s missile and nuclear facilities to targeting senior leadership, though Trump has stated he prefers a diplomatic deal addressing Tehran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and support for armed groups demands Iran has rejected.

Analysts believe Washington may be seeking a short, high-impact campaign to weaken Iran’s military capabilities without becoming trapped in a prolonged war. Tehran has warned it would retaliate forcefully against any attack.

The US military presence now includes multiple aircraft carriers, destroyers, warplanes, and tens of thousands of troops across the region, all potential targets in the event of hostilities.

Critics in Congress caution that military action could trigger another major conflict, while regional allies fear spillover instability. Experts also warn that even a successful strike could produce unpredictable consequences, including internal turmoil inside Iran.

The ultimate outcome of any confrontation remains uncertain, with officials acknowledging that no clear plan exists for what would follow major escalation or potential regime collapse.
