Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has been placed under high-level security scrutiny after the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) issued a direct statement targeting her. The threats follow a series of inflammatory exchanges regarding political rhetoric and religious sensitivities in the province.

The provincial government moved to tighten the minister’s security detail late Tuesday, citing specific intelligence reports that suggest an increased risk of targeted violence. Police officials confirm that a specialized unit is now stationed at her residence, and her travel protocols have been significantly overhauled to mitigate exposure.

The tension escalated after a TLP spokesperson publicly addressed Bukhari, using language that government officials have characterized as an incitement to harm. The minister, who has maintained a combative stance against the group’s recent street protests and policy demands, has not backed down from her public position despite the direct warnings.

“They think silence is the only option, but we aren’t living in a state where threats dictate policy,” an aide close to Bukhari told reporters on Wednesday. The aide confirmed the minister remains operational but is now coordinating closely with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

Security analysts argue that the incident reflects a widening fracture between the provincial administration and hardline religious factions. For the administration, the challenge is twofold: maintaining law and order without appearing to capitulate to pressure tactics, while simultaneously protecting high-profile figures from becoming lightning rods for extremist agitation.

This isn’t the first time the minister has found herself at the center of a confrontation with the group. Her previous public remarks regarding the TLP’s influence on provincial governance had already drawn local protests. However, the intensity of this current threat level has shifted the narrative from political disagreement to a matter of immediate physical safety.

While the police have launched a formal inquiry into the source and distribution of the TLP’s statement, no arrests have been made. Whether this move by the state will deter further intimidation or embolden the group remains the central question for the Punjab cabinet as they weigh their next move.
