Excessive Rice Consumption Tied to Life-Threatening Diseases

Rice is considered one of the most important and staple foods globally, especially in regions like Asia, Africa, and Latin America where it forms a central part of the daily diet. However, recent research has warned that excessive consumption of rice can pose serious risks to human health.

According to a study conducted by the University of Manchester and the University of Salford in the UK, rice contains high levels of a toxic element called arsenic, which, when consumed over a long period, can accumulate in the human body and lead to severe diseases. Arsenic is a naturally occurring poison found in soil and water, but when it enters the human body in its inorganic form through rice, it can cause cardiovascular diseases, heart problems, and even cancer.

The study estimates that around 50,000 deaths occur worldwide every year due to the toxic effects of arsenic present in rice. This problem is especially severe in areas where rice is a daily food item.

The research also noted that different types of rice contain varying levels of arsenic. Basmati rice, which is commonly consumed in Pakistan and India, tends to have lower levels of arsenic compared to other types. Therefore, experts advise not to completely avoid rice but to adopt a balanced diet and prioritize basmati or low-arsenic varieties of rice.

Furthermore, changes in the cooking method — such as soaking rice in water before cooking or boiling it and draining the excess water — can help reduce arsenic content. It is also recommended to include fiber-rich foods, vegetables, and fruits to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Experts have cautioned that while rice is nutritious and a staple for a large part of the global population, moderation and caution in its consumption are essential to avoid the potential toxic effects of arsenic.
