Islamabad: The Pakistan federal government on Sunday increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel for the next fortnight, effective from February 16.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been raised by Rs5 per litre, taking it from Rs253.17 to Rs258.17 per litre. Meanwhile, high-speed diesel (HSD) has become costlier by Rs7.32 per litre, with the new rate set at Rs275.70 compared to the previous Rs268.38.
The revised prices will remain in force for the upcoming 15 days.
During the previous review, the government had increased the price of high-speed diesel by Rs11.30 per litre, while keeping petrol prices unchanged.
Petrol is primarily used by commuters in small vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws, meaning higher prices place an added burden on middle- and lower-middle-income households who depend on it for daily travel.
High-speed diesel, on the other hand, is a key fuel for the transport and agricultural sectors, including trucks, buses, trains, tractors, tube wells, and threshers. Due to its widespread use in moving goods and agricultural operations, any increase in HSD prices is considered inflationary and often leads to higher costs of vegetables and other essential food items.
