Condemnations poured in from across Pakistan and abroad after a deadly suicide bombing targeted a passenger train in Quetta, leaving at least 23 people dead and more than 70 injured. Officials said the bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a railway track as the train was passing, causing two coaches to overturn and catch fire.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous crime against humanity” and expressing deep sympathy with the bereaved families. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also denounced the blast, describing it as an attack on humanity and Pakistan’s integrity.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the bombing, terming it a cowardly act of terrorism. The Balochistan government declared an emergency in hospitals as many of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman also condemned the attack, calling it an act of “grisly brutality” and saying innocent passengers, including women and children, had been targeted while travelling for Eid.
International actors, including Turkey, Australia and the United Kingdom, also expressed solidarity with Pakistan and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack. The Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility, according to AP, while Pakistani officials vowed to bring the perpetrators and facilitators to justice.
