🇵🇹 Portugal Edge Past Spain in Thrilling Shootout to Clinch Second Nations League Title

In a heart-pounding UEFA Nations League final in Munich, Portugal emerged victorious over Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout, sealing a 5–3 win after an intense 2–2 draw in regulation and extra time.

The match had all the ingredients of a classic. Spain struck first through Martín Zubimendi early on, putting pressure on Portugal to respond. And they did — left-back Nuno Mendes, who had a spectacular night, leveled the score with a sharp finish. But Spain refused to back down. Mikel Oyarzabal’s strike just before halftime nudged them back into the lead.

Then came the inevitable — Cristiano Ronaldo. In what might have been his last appearance in a major final, the 40-year-old icon fired in Portugal’s second, marking his 138th international goal. Sadly, his night ended in pain as he limped off injured late in the game, tears in his eyes as he watched the rest unfold from the bench.

With extra time failing to break the deadlock, it came down to penalties — and Portugal held their nerve. Every Portuguese penalty-taker delivered under pressure, while Spain’s Álvaro Morata flinched, his effort denied. Rúben Neves hammered home the winning kick, sparking celebrations that echoed the team’s 2019 Nations League triumph.

This win makes Portugal the first team to win the competition twice — a milestone that adds another feather to their growing international legacy. Roberto Martínez, in his first major tournament with Portugal since taking over from Fernando Santos, celebrated his first title in charge.

But the night wasn’t without tragedy. A fan tragically fell to their death from the stands of Munich’s Allianz Arena. UEFA later confirmed the incident, and players from both teams paid their respects.

Nuno Mendes, the 22-year-old standout, was deservedly named Player of the Final and Tournament MVP, thanks to his goal, assist, and defensive solidity throughout.

As Ronaldo later said with a tearful smile, “Winning for Portugal is always special. This one means the world.”
