Karachi Paralysed: Torrential Rains Claim Seven Lives, Plunge City into Darkness

KARACHI: At least seven people lost their lives as torrential rains battered Karachi on Monday, causing widespread urban flooding, electrocution incidents, and structural collapses. The relentless downpour left large parts of the city submerged, crippling daily life and plunging 40% of Karachi into darkness after 800 power feeders tripped.

Among the casualties were a woman and her two children who died when a wall collapsed in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, while another person was killed in the same incident. In Orangi Town, an eight-year-old boy lost his life after being buried under debris from a collapsed wall. Separately, two men were electrocuted in North Karachi and DHA’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari.

The heavy rains disrupted traffic across major arteries, leaving commuters stranded as vehicles broke down in waist-deep water. Several neighborhoods, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Saddar, Landhi, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed, witnessed severe flooding, while rainwater entered homes in multiple low-lying areas.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori visited affected areas, assisted stranded citizens, and announced the establishment of a 24/7 Rain Emergency Cell at the Governor House, assuring residents that “no citizen will be left alone in this crisis.” Meteorological officials warned that further heavy rainfall is expected over the next three to four days, with some areas forecast to receive up to 100 millimeters.
