Riyadh: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has ordered that a major street in the capital be renamed in memory of the late Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh, who passed away on September 23, 2025.
The Crown Prince’s directive pays tribute to Sheikh Abdulaziz’s lifelong commitment to Islamic scholarship, jurisprudence, and service to both the Kingdom and the wider Muslim world.
Sheikh Abdulaziz, who became Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti in June 1999, spent decades interpreting Shariah law and issuing fatwas on a wide range of legal, financial, and social matters. His rulings were known for striking a balance between traditional Islamic principles and the needs of a rapidly modernizing society.
During his tenure, he also chaired the Council of Senior Scholars, presided over the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, and played an active role in the Muslim World League’s Supreme Council, extending his influence far beyond Saudi Arabia.
Respected for his ability to guide individuals and institutions alike, Sheikh Abdulaziz was widely seen as a bridge between classical Islamic jurisprudence and contemporary challenges. His passing marked the end of an era in the Kingdom’s religious leadership.
By renaming a main street in Riyadh in his honor, the Saudi leadership seeks to enshrine his legacy and ensure that his decades of service to Islam and the Muslim community are remembered for generations to come.
