Residents of Manchester’s Crumpsall district are reeling in disbelief after a deadly attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue claimed two lives. The incident, which took place on Thursday morning during Yom Kippur, has shaken a community known for its diversity and close-knit ties.

According to police, the attacker drove his car into pedestrians near the synagogue around 9:30am before getting out and stabbing others. Security staff and bystanders managed to stop him from entering the synagogue, where dozens of worshippers had gathered. Officers later shot the assailant, who appeared to be wearing a fake explosive device. Four people remain in hospital with serious injuries.

Counterterrorism officers confirmed that two arrests have been made in connection with the attack, though the suspect’s identity and motives have not yet been revealed. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation, while urging the public to remain calm but vigilant.

For many locals, the violence feels unthinkable. “I heard the shots this morning, but I thought it was fireworks,” said 23-year-old Zaki, standing with his family near the police cordon. Like others in the area, he described Crumpsall as a place where different communities live side by side in peace. “Everyone here gets on well,” he added, struggling to process the day’s events.
