More than 84,000 aspiring pilgrims have already deposited their first installment under the government’s Hajj scheme for 2027. The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed the milestone Monday, noting that the initial financial commitment marks a significant step forward in the country’s early-start preparations for the pilgrimage.

The government opened the portal for applications earlier this month, aiming to streamline logistics and avoid the last-minute administrative scrambles that have complicated previous cycles. By securing commitments this early, officials hope to lock in better airfare rates and accommodation deals in Saudi Arabia.

For the applicants, the stakes are high. The total cost of the pilgrimage remains a point of contention, with economic volatility making long-term financial planning difficult for middle-class families. While the ministry has promised transparency in its cost-breakdown, many pilgrims are watching the currency exchange rates closely, fearing that the final installment could swell if the rupee loses further ground.

“We’ve prioritized an early rollout to ensure we aren’t at the mercy of seasonal price hikes,” said a ministry spokesperson. “The response from applicants shows that despite the economic pressure, the intent to perform Hajj remains a non-negotiable priority for thousands.”

The application process itself has seen a shift in tone. The ministry has moved heavily toward digital filings, cutting down on the paperwork that once clogged regional offices. However, the reliance on online systems has left some applicants in remote areas struggling with connectivity and technical hurdles.

The government expects the numbers to climb as the deadline approaches, but the rapid influx of over 84,000 deposits in the first phase suggests a public eager to secure their spot. As the ministry prepares for the next phase of the process, the focus will shift to finalizing flight quotas and hotel contracts in Makkah and Madinah.

For those who have already paid, the relief of securing a slot is tempered by the wait for the final budget disclosure. The ministry’s ability to keep the total cost manageable will be the true test of this year’s planning.
