Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the withdrawal of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s proposed clause in the 27th Constitutional Amendment that sought to grant immunity to the office of the prime minister.

In a statement shared on X, the prime minister said that upon returning from Azerbaijan, he learned that some party senators had submitted a proposal seeking legal immunity for the prime minister.

“I respect their good intentions,” he wrote, “but this suggestion was not part of the draft approved by the cabinet. I have immediately ordered it to be withdrawn.”

Reaffirming his stance on accountability, Shehbaz Sharif stated, “A democratically elected prime minister must remain fully answerable before both the courts and the people.”

His remarks come at a time when Senate and National Assembly committees are reviewing the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
