Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has landed in fresh controversy after a complaint was filed against him in Bangalore’s High Grounds Police Station, accusing him of disrespecting Hindu sacred rituals.
According to police sources, local lawyer Prashant Methal has alleged that Ranveer insulted the traditions of “Bhuta Kola” and “Deva,” which has triggered anger among several Hindu groups. Although an official FIR has not yet been registered, pressure from Hindutva extremist groups continues to grow.
Witnesses reported that a frustrated crowd even tried to surround the police station, but authorities managed to disperse them. Despite this, some groups are reportedly planning to escalate the issue further.
The controversy began after Ranveer performed at the closing ceremony of a film awards show in Goa, where he mimicked actor Rishab Shetty’s character from the film Kantara. The act drew public criticism, prompting Ranveer to issue a clarification on Instagram, saying his intention was only to appreciate Rishab Shetty’s performance, not to disrespect any belief or culture.
However, the backlash intensified. The Hindu Jana Jagruti Samiti also lodged a separate complaint accusing Ranveer of insulting the deity Devi Chamunda, pushing him into legal trouble in two different states.
Ranveer has not commented further, and his legal team is evaluating possible responses. Meanwhile, the actor continues promoting his new film “Dhurandhar.”
The ongoing situation raises broader questions about creative expression and the cultural sensitivities that influence India’s entertainment landscape.
