Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced Rs 10 million compensation for each family of those killed in the Gul Plaza tragedy and assured full rehabilitation of all affected people.
According to the Chief Minister, 15 bodies have been recovered so far, 22 people sustained minor injuries and have been discharged, while 65 individuals are still missing. Around 80 people were affected by the incident.
He said the fire broke out around 10:15 am two days ago. While the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, an electrical short circuit is suspected. A forensic investigation has been ordered.
The Chief Minister added that over 200 firefighters from KMC and Rescue 1122 took part in the rescue operation, with support from the Navy and Civil Aviation Authority. Nearly 40 percent of the building has collapsed, and further damage is feared.
Murad Ali Shah said compensation payments will begin today, and a special committee has been formed to oversee the rehabilitation of affected families and traders.
