Depression and anxiety are disorders affecting people of all ages in the present era. Individuals suffering from depression or anxiety face both mental and physical problems. However, the good news is that preventing these common mental disorders is not very difficult and is largely within your own control.

‎A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that making aerobic exercise a regular habit is the most effective way to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety. Aerobic exercises include activities such as brisk walking, running, swimming, climbing stairs, and cycling. These exercises increase heart rate and cause heavier breathing, which improves heart and respiratory health.

‎During the research, data from multiple studies were analyzed. These studies examined the effects of exercise, placebo, or no intervention on symptoms of depression and anxiety.

‎The research found that while all types of physical activity help reduce the severity of depression, aerobic exercises can also help relieve anxiety along with depression.

‎Depression and anxiety affect one in four people worldwide, with higher rates reported among youth and women. The study stated that all forms of exercise help reduce the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms.

‎In particular, individuals aged 18 to 30 benefit the most from physical activity. Researchers also noted that consuming a healthy diet has positive effects on mental health. Moreover, the bacteria Lactobacillus found in yogurt plays an important role in this regard, as it helps control stress, depression, and anxiety.

‎The findings of the study were published in the journal Brain Behavior and Immunity.
