Traffic on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) has been restored after landslides triggered by heavy rainfall blocked multiple sections of the vital route linking Gilgit-Baltistan with the rest of Pakistan.
According to officials, continuous rain caused landslides at several points in Upper Kohistan and Diamer, leading to the suspension of traffic and leaving hundreds of passengers and transport vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway.
Authorities, including local administration and road maintenance teams, launched clearance operations using heavy machinery to remove debris and reopen the road. The highway was later restored for traffic after the affected sections were cleared.
The Karakoram Highway, a key economic and strategic route connecting Pakistan with China and northern regions, is frequently vulnerable to disruptions due to landslides, especially during periods of intense rainfall and snowfall.
Despite the reopening, officials have warned that continued rainfall could trigger further landslides, urging travelers to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
Earlier, the road closures had temporarily cut off Gilgit-Baltistan from the rest of the country by land, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather conditions.
