Austrian police say rat poison was found in a jar of baby food, triggering a major food-safety scare and a wide recall in the country. Reports say the affected product was a HiPP baby food jar, and the discovery came after authorities began investigating suspected tampering.

The recalled product is reported to be HiPP “carrot with potato” puree, sold through SPAR supermarkets in Austria. According to reports, HiPP announced the recall after it could not rule out that a dangerous substance had been introduced into the product through deliberate interference.

Police and retailers are treating the case as a possible tampering or sabotage incident, not a routine manufacturing fault. Coverage says the supplier launched the recall after concerns that the jar contents may have been manipulated, and customers were warned not to consume the product.

The case has raised wider alarm because the recalled baby food line was reportedly distributed across a large number of stores in Austria. The Independent says the recall affected more than 1,000 SPAR supermarkets, while other reports describe it as a nationwide action.

At this stage, the key public-safety message is clear: anyone who bought the affected jars should not use them and should follow the retailer’s recall instructions. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine how the poison got into the jar and whether more products were tampered with.
