Rain Alert for Karachi: PMD Predicts Thunderstorms, High Winds from May 5

KARACHI – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh forecast warning of rain and thunderstorms expected to hit Karachi starting from the evening of May 5, accompanied by strong winds and increased humidity levels.

The severe weather system, likely to persist for the next few days, is also expected to affect Upper Sindh and parts of Balochistan. PMD has further cautioned that due to high humidity, temperatures may feel hotter than they actually are, with Karachi expected to hit a maximum of 37°C.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms have also been predicted in Islamabad, the Potohar region, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Certain areas may experience heavy downpours, raising concerns of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

In response to the worsening weather conditions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have issued advisories urging the public to limit non-essential travel, stay updated on weather alerts, and take precautionary measures, particularly in landslide-prone regions.

Recent lightning-related incidents during ongoing storms have already resulted in two fatalities and 24 injuries, while nine buildings have suffered partial damage.

The NDMA earlier warned that unstable weather would persist from May 1 to May 7, triggered by moisture influx from the eastern regions and the Arabian Sea, along with rising temperatures and humidity.
