BANNU — Security forces neutralized one militant and took eight others into custody during a targeted operation in the Bannu district today. The joint sweep, involving police and counter-terrorism units, comes as authorities push to clear pockets of insurgent activity in the region.

The firefight erupted early this morning when security personnel surrounded a compound acting on intelligence reports of militant movement. As troops closed the perimeter, the suspects opened fire. A brief, intense gun battle followed, leaving one militant dead. Eight others surrendered as the tactical team breached the site.

Local police officials confirmed the recovery of weapons and ammunition from the scene. The detainees are being moved to an undisclosed location for interrogation, with investigators looking for links to recent attacks on regional security outposts.

Bannu has remained a flashpoint for militant activity over the past several months. Attacks on both military convoys and civilian infrastructure have forced local authorities to adopt a more aggressive, intelligence-led approach to clearing the area.

While the immediate area has been secured, the operation remains active. Security teams are currently conducting house-to-house searches in the surrounding neighborhoods to ensure no other militants remain in hiding.

The provincial government has yet to issue a formal statement, but regional security commanders are expected to provide a detailed briefing on the detainees’ affiliations later this evening. For now, the focus remains on mapping the network of the cell dismantled during today’s raid.
