Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has placed all provincial departments on high alert, bracing for a potentially volatile monsoon season. The directive follows weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall across the province, with a specific focus on urban flooding risks in Karachi and rural infrastructure stability.

The meeting, held at the Sindh Secretariat, moved beyond weather logistics. Shah pivoted the discussion to food security, ordering an immediate crackdown on wheat hoarding. He tasked district administrations with raiding suspected warehouses, aiming to stabilize flour prices before the rain-induced supply chain disruptions begin.

“We cannot afford a dual crisis,” an official briefed on the meeting said. “The priority is keeping the supply lines open while the downpours hit.”

The administration has identified several “vulnerable points” in the irrigation network and urban drainage systems. While the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) claims to have pre-positioned heavy machinery in low-lying areas, previous seasons have shown that clearing drainage lines remains a persistent hurdle.

The Chief Secretary’s orders are clear: any official found negligent in the clearing of storm drains or the monitoring of grain stocks will face immediate suspension.

As the first clouds gather, the government’s challenge is two-fold: keeping the cities from drowning and keeping the food supply from disappearing. With grain prices already sensitive to market fluctuations, the success of these raids will determine whether the province faces a manageable season or a manufactured shortage.
