National Accountability Bureau (NAB) investigators moved into Karachi’s Lyari district Tuesday, sealing several houses and commercial plazas linked to the long-standing Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project.

The operation marks a significant escalation in the bureau’s investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for families displaced by the highway’s construction. NAB officials confirmed the properties were seized under the National Accountability Ordinance, citing evidence that the assets were acquired through illicit gains linked to the project’s payout schemes.

For residents of Lyari, the move brings a measure of closure to a saga that has dragged on for years. Families have long alleged that local middlemen and government contractors siphoned off compensation money, leaving genuine affectees in substandard housing while developers profited from the state-funded project.

“We’ve been waiting for this for over a decade,” said a local community leader who requested anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. “The houses were built with money that belonged to the people who lost their homes. Seeing them sealed is the first sign that someone is finally listening.”

NAB investigators spent hours cataloging assets, including high-value commercial plazas that had become symbols of the project’s alleged corruption. Sources within the bureau indicated that these seizures are part of a broader crackdown on officials who managed the resettlement fund between 2018 and 2022.

The investigation isn’t just targeting the buildings. NAB is currently cross-referencing bank statements of former project directors with land registry documents to trace the flow of funds. Bureau officials indicated that more arrests are likely as the audit of the project’s financial records nears completion.

Despite the move, critics remain skeptical about whether the recovered assets will ever translate into actual support for the displaced families. The bureau has yet to outline a plan for the future of the sealed buildings, leaving many to wonder if the property will remain in legal limbo for years to come.

As the yellow tape remains across the entrances of the sealed plazas, the pressure is now on the bureau to prove these seizures are more than just a public display of accountability. The next phase of the investigation—tracking the actual beneficiaries of the embezzled funds—will determine if this case leads to real justice or merely another stalled legal battle.
