Police in Karachi have arrested a local businessman who staged his own murder to escape millions in debt. Investigators say the trader, who had been missing for weeks, orchestrated a “death” to stall creditors he had swindled through a fake investment scheme.

The suspect, identified by police as a wholesale commodity dealer in the city’s busy Jodia Bazaar, went dark early last month. His family reported him kidnapped, and a body—later identified as a vagrant—was allegedly planted to lead investigators toward a homicide investigation. It was a calculated move to buy time.

“He thought he’d wipe the slate clean by becoming a ghost,” a senior police official told reporters on Tuesday. “He didn’t account for the digital footprint he left behind.”

The scheme began to unravel when detectives noticed inconsistencies in the kidnapping report. Financial records showed the trader had been aggressively liquidating assets and shifting funds into offshore accounts days before he “vanished.” While his family maintained he was a victim of rising street crime, police discovered he was hiding in a rented apartment in a quiet suburb on the city’s outskirts.

Investors who had poured life savings into his commodity business now face a grim reality. Many were promised high-margin returns on grain and sugar stocks—returns that never existed. One investor, who lost nearly five million rupees, described the operation as a “sophisticated shell game” that relied on trust and local community standing.

The suspect is currently in custody, facing charges of fraud and fabricating evidence. Police are now working with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to track the missing capital.

For the dozens of families waiting for their money, the arrest offers little comfort. The trader’s “death” may have been a fabrication, but the financial ruin he left behind is absolute.
