NYALA: At least 21 people have been killed and more than 40 injured in a drone strike on a market in Nyala, a stronghold of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to medical sources and eyewitnesses. The attack took place at around 8pm on Monday in the northern part of the city in western Darfur, residents told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
A medic at Nyala Hospital confirmed that 21 bodies had been brought in following the bombardment, while more than 40 wounded people were taken for treatment. The medical source could not determine how many of the casualties were members of the RSF.
Witnesses said the market was frequented by young men, including fighters from the paramilitary group.
Nyala serves as the de facto capital of the RSF’s administration in Darfur. Sudan’s military has repeatedly carried out strikes in the city as fighting continues between the army and the paramilitary force.
The latest attack comes amid an intensification of drone warfare across Sudan, where both sides have increasingly relied on unmanned aircraft to strike targets far from frontline positions.
The conflict erupted in April 2023 and has caused widespread civilian casualties, mass displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis. No side had been confirmed as responsible for Monday’s market strike in the reports available at the time of publication.
