The cost of living in the United States grew at its slowest pace in more than three years last month, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. The report confirms a cooling trend that has been months in the making, finally offering relief to households squeezed by years of stubborn price hikes.

Headline inflation rose 2.4% year-over-year in September, down from 2.5% in August. While the figure remains slightly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, it marks the smallest increase since February 2021.

The primary driver behind the shift? The gas pump. Energy prices dropped 6.8% over the past year, with gasoline costs falling significantly. Grocery prices, which haunted shoppers throughout 2022 and 2023, remained largely flat, providing a much-needed reprieve at the checkout counter.

Yet, the “core” inflation rate—a metric that strips out volatile food and energy costs—ticked up slightly to 3.3%. This uptick is largely fueled by stubborn service sector costs, particularly in housing and medical care. Rent prices aren’t falling as fast as analysts once hoped, keeping the overall index from dropping as sharply as some had anticipated.

For the Federal Reserve, these numbers present a complicated picture. Policy makers are currently weighing whether to continue cutting interest rates or to pause. With the labor market showing signs of cooling and inflation nearing the target, the pressure to maintain high borrowing costs is fading, but the slight rise in core prices suggests that the final mile of the inflation fight won’t be easy.

“The trend is clearly downward, but it’s not a straight line,” said a senior market analyst at a leading financial firm. “We’re seeing the ‘easy’ inflation gains in goods and energy, but the service sector remains a sticky problem that won’t resolve overnight.”

For the average American, the headline numbers tell a story of stabilization. While prices aren’t necessarily dropping back to pre-pandemic levels—a common point of frustration among voters—the rate at which they climb has finally hit a manageable gear.

The Federal Reserve meets again in November. With this data in hand, officials will have to decide if the current cooling is enough to justify another rate cut, or if they need to let the data settle further before making their next move.
