Ventura County officials issued immediate evacuation orders for over 10,000 residents Wednesday as the “Mountain Fire” exploded in size, fueled by record-breaking Santa Ana winds. The blaze, which ignited near Somis, jumped containment lines within hours and is currently tearing through hillsides toward densely populated neighborhoods.

The fire grew from a few hundred acres to over 14,000 in less than six hours. That pace is rare, even for a region accustomed to seasonal wildfires. Wind gusts hitting 80 mph are turning embers into missiles, sparking spot fires miles ahead of the main front.

“We are in a life-safety mode,” Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner told reporters at an emergency briefing. He confirmed that first responders are pulling people from their homes as the flames close in, prioritizing evacuations over perimeter control.

The blaze is carving a path through Camarillo Heights, where thick smoke has effectively turned midday into twilight. Utility provider Southern California Edison cut power to nearly 70,000 customers as a precaution, hoping to prevent downed lines from sparking further ignitions.

Hospitals in the area are operating under emergency protocols. St. John’s Hospital in Camarillo has moved patients to other facilities as a precaution, while local schools have been converted into temporary shelters for families who left with nothing but their vehicles.

Meteorologists warn that the wind event — categorized as “extreme” by the National Weather Service — won’t taper off until Thursday evening. Until then, the fire remains entirely uncontained.

For the families currently jammed on the 101 Freeway, the immediate concern isn’t the total acreage lost or the environmental impact. It is whether their homes will remain standing when the winds finally die down.
