The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission has rejected two separate petitions challenging the victory of Chaudhry Yasin Rathore in the LA-17 constituency. The decision effectively keeps the results of the recent polls intact, dismissing allegations of irregularities that had been leveled by rival candidates.

The commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Abdul Rasheed Sulehria, heard arguments from both sides before issuing the ruling. Petitioners had claimed the election process was marred by voter intimidation and ballot tampering, demanding a recount or a fresh poll in specific polling stations.

Rathore’s legal team argued the petitions lacked concrete evidence, characterizing them as “baseless attempts” to disrupt the democratic process after the fact. The commission agreed, noting that the evidence provided did not meet the legal threshold required to trigger an investigation or overturn the declared results.

For the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), this ruling provides crucial breathing room in the regional assembly. Rathore’s win is a significant piece of their seat count, and any shift in the results would have complicated the party’s standing in the legislative house.

The opposition, meanwhile, has expressed dissatisfaction with the commission’s decision. While the legal avenues within the commission are now exhausted, the defeated candidates have indicated they may move toward the high court to contest the commission’s verdict.

As it stands, the election outcome in LA-17 holds. The commission’s refusal to entertain these petitions signals a move to finalize the electoral results, closing a chapter of uncertainty that had lingered since the ballots were counted.

Whether the opposition pursues a judicial review remains the primary question. For now, Rathore remains the confirmed representative for the constituency.
