Construction workers in the Belgian town of Lier stumbled upon more than just old pipes this week. While excavating the site of a former brewery, a backhoe operator unearthed a heavy, rusted metal box containing gold bars and coins valued at approximately $10 million.

The discovery occurred on Tuesday morning during a routine renovation project aimed at converting the derelict brewery into a modern residential complex. The cache, buried nearly three meters deep beneath the facility’s original foundation, appears to date back to the mid-20th century.

“We thought it was scrap metal at first,” said the site foreman, Marc Van den Berg. “The box was welded shut, but the weight told a different story. When we pried it open, the light hit the gold—it was surreal.”

Local authorities and the national heritage office have since cordoned off the site. While the identity of the original owner remains a mystery, historians suggest the gold may have been hidden during the German occupation of Belgium in World War II. During that period, many residents and businesses buried valuables to prevent them from being seized by occupying forces.

The legal battle for ownership has already begun. Under Belgian law, items found on private property are typically split between the landowner and the finder, though the government may claim a portion if the haul is deemed of significant historical value.

The developer of the site, who purchased the property last year, remains in talks with legal counsel to determine the tax implications and inheritance claims. Meanwhile, the site is under police guard, with experts from the Royal Museums of Art and History scheduled to inspect the coins for mint marks that could pinpoint their origin.

For the residents of Lier, the brewery—a long-standing symbol of the town’s industrial decline—has suddenly become the center of a national mystery. Whether the gold stays in the local community or ends up in a state vault, the find has already rewritten the history of the old brewery site.

“Everyone in town is talking about it,” said local mayor Frank Boogaerts. “People are wondering who put it there and why they never came back for it.”
