Two fishermen are recovering in a Florida hospital today after spending five days stranded in the Gulf of Mexico, clinging to a lone plastic cooler to stay afloat. The U.S. Coast Guard pulled the men from the water Tuesday morning, ending a harrowing search that had spanned hundreds of square miles.

The pair went missing last Thursday after their 24-foot boat took on water and sank roughly 25 miles off the coast of Cedar Key. With no time to deploy an emergency beacon or radio for help, they grabbed the only piece of flotation gear available: a large, insulated cooler.

“They were exhausted and dehydrated, but they were talking,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Michael DeNyse, one of the rescue crew members who spotted the men.

The rescue mission became a race against time as tropical storm conditions moved into the area, complicating search patterns. Search teams from the Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies scoured the region by air and sea, but the men had drifted significantly from their original position due to shifting currents.

Survival experts point to the cooler as the deciding factor. While it provided just enough buoyancy to keep their heads above water, the men faced grueling exposure to the elements. They spent nearly 120 hours battling the sun, salt, and the constant threat of marine predators, all while keeping their grip on the plastic lid.

Hospital staff confirmed that both men are in stable condition. They are expected to be discharged within the next 48 hours.

The Coast Guard has not yet released the names of the survivors, citing privacy concerns. An investigation into the boat’s sinking remains ongoing, though officials suggest that sudden mechanical failure or an overwhelmed hull likely caused the vessel to go down without warning.

For now, the men are home. They survived five days in open water with no supplies, relying on little more than a piece of plastic and the will to keep holding on.
