The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh alert for heavy monsoon rains across the country, starting August 27. The weather system is expected to persist through August 31, bringing potential urban flooding to low-lying areas and raising water levels in local streams.

The incoming system, originating from the Bay of Bengal, is set to track across the upper and central parts of the country. Residents in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore should prepare for intermittent heavy downpours, which the PMD says could trigger localized flooding in urban centers.

“We are monitoring the intensity of this system closely,” a PMD spokesperson said. “The primary concern is the potential for flash flooding in the hilly areas of Galyat, Murree, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where saturated ground from previous rains increases the risk of landslides.”

For farmers, the news is a double-edged sword. While the rainfall will provide relief to crops in arid regions, the intensity of the predicted downpours threatens to damage standing crops in fields already struggling with poor drainage. The agricultural sector, already bracing for the impact, has been advised by local authorities to take precautionary measures to protect harvests.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has directed provincial authorities to remain on high alert. Emergency response teams are being moved to pre-designated areas, particularly in districts prone to seasonal flooding. District administrations have been instructed to clear drainage systems and ensure that heavy machinery is stationed near vulnerable points to clear potential blockages immediately.

Travelers planning trips to northern areas this week should exercise caution. The PMD has explicitly warned of possible road closures along the Karakoram Highway and in other mountainous regions due to the threat of landslides.

While the monsoon season has already seen significant precipitation this year, this late-August spell serves as a reminder that the weather remains volatile. Officials are urging the public to stay updated through official channels and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours.
