A viral video showing a heated altercation between civilians and men in police uniforms in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has triggered a formal departmental inquiry. Senior police officials confirmed the investigation late Tuesday, aiming to determine whether the individuals involved were acting in an official capacity or abusing their authority.
The footage, which surfaced on social media platforms over the weekend, depicts a group of men—some appearing to wear police-issued tactical gear—confronting a motorist near a commercial strip in DHA Phase 6. The argument quickly escalated into a scuffle, with bystanders filming as the men in uniform used aggressive language and physical force.
South Zone police officials said they are currently reviewing the footage to identify the personnel. The primary question investigators face is whether these men were on duty or engaged in private intimidation.
“We are verifying if the uniforms are authentic and if these individuals are on our active roster,” a senior officer told reporters. He stopped short of confirming whether any arrests had been made, adding that the department has “zero tolerance for the misuse of the uniform.”
For residents of Karachi, the incident echoes long-standing frustrations regarding the conduct of law enforcement in affluent neighborhoods. DHA has frequently been the site of high-profile altercations, often involving private security details or individuals claiming proximity to power. This particular case has gained traction specifically because of the clear display of police insignia, raising concerns about the breakdown of departmental discipline.
The incident has also drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups, who argue that the lack of accountability for officers in such incidents emboldens further misconduct.
Investigators are expected to submit their findings to the DIG South by the end of the week. Whether this leads to departmental charges or a broader internal crackdown remains to be seen, but the pressure on the department to act is mounting as the video continues to circulate.
