The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the Karachi police to provide immediate security to a family assaulted in the city’s upscale Defense Housing Authority (DHA) neighborhood. The court’s directive follows a viral video showing a group of armed men attacking the family’s vehicle, sparking public outrage over the perceived influence of elite suspects in the city.

Justice Mohammad Karim Khan Agha issued the order after the victims’ counsel argued that the family was facing persistent threats from the influential suspects involved in the altercation. The court made it clear: the police must ensure the family’s safety and report back on the protection measures implemented.

The incident, which took place earlier this month, saw the family’s car cornered by multiple vehicles. Armed men emerged, shattered the windshield, and physically threatened the occupants. While police initially struggled to make headway, the visual evidence forced a series of arrests.

Despite the arrests, the victims told the court that they were being pressured to settle the matter out of court. This pattern of intimidation is a familiar hurdle in high-profile cases involving suspects with political or financial connections in Karachi.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for the South Zone has been tasked with overseeing the security detail. The court has also demanded a comprehensive progress report on the investigation, signaling that it intends to keep the case under judicial oversight to prevent the influence of powerful figures from stalling the legal process.

For many residents of DHA, the case has become a litmus test for the local police force’s ability to act impartially. The court’s intervention has effectively stripped away the veil of impunity usually afforded to those who believe their status places them above the law.

The next hearing is scheduled for later this month, where the court will review the police’s compliance with the protection order. Whether this results in a swift trial or another drawn-out legal battle depends on how strictly the police enforce the court’s directives in the coming weeks.
