LAHORE — The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested a man in Lahore on Tuesday, accusing him of operating a human-trafficking ring that funneled dozens of unsuspecting laborers into Europe.

The suspect, identified by officials as Muhammad Asif, was apprehended during a raid in the Johar Town area. Investigators say he had been on their radar for six months following a series of complaints from families in Gujranwala and Sialkot. They claim he charged victims upwards of 2.5 million rupees, promising legal work visas for Italy and Greece.

Instead, the victims allegedly found themselves stranded in Turkey or North Africa, often with their passports confiscated.

“He targeted desperate families,” said an FIA deputy director familiar with the investigation. “He sold them a dream of European citizenship, but all he delivered was a life-threatening journey through illegal channels.”

The agency seized several forged travel documents, blank visa stickers, and a cache of passports from the suspect’s residence. Digital forensic teams are now combing through his mobile devices to identify the rest of the network. Officials believe Asif is a mid-level coordinator in a syndicate that stretches from Lahore to transit hubs in the Middle East.

The arrest comes as the Interior Ministry faces mounting pressure to crack down on illegal migration networks. Recent incidents involving boat sinkings in the Mediterranean have pushed the agency to expand its intelligence-gathering operations across Punjab.

Asif remains in custody at the FIA’s Lahore circle office. He is expected to face charges under the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, which carries a potential life sentence for those found guilty of exploiting migrants for profit.

For the victims still abroad, the arrest offers little immediate relief. The FIA says it is now coordinating with the Foreign Office to track down those currently trapped in transit, though repatriating them remains a complex legal and logistical challenge.
