Sohail Afridi has publicly challenged the Sindh government to justify the widespread road blockades currently paralyzing parts of Karachi. The move comes as residents face severe traffic disruptions, with major arteries sealed off ahead of a high-profile visit by government officials.

Afridi, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, labeled the closures “an administrative failure” that prioritizes the comfort of a few over the daily survival of millions. Commuters have spent hours stranded in gridlock across the city’s central districts since early morning, as shipping containers and police barricades narrowed key transit routes.

“Karachi isn’t a fortress to be locked down every time a minister decides to travel,” Afridi told reporters. He stopped short of calling for protests, but his tone signaled a shift toward direct confrontation with the provincial authorities.

The Sindh government has yet to issue a formal response regarding the security protocols or the specific duration of the closures. Police officials on the ground have cited “security concerns” for the blockades, though they provided no details on the specific threats or the necessity of shutting down primary commercial routes.

For the average Karachiite, the reasoning matters less than the immediate impact. Emergency services, public transport, and local businesses are reporting significant losses, with ambulances struggling to navigate the maze of barricades.

Afridi’s demand for transparency is gaining traction among local business associations, who argue that the city’s infrastructure cannot sustain such frequent, unannounced disruptions. If the provincial government continues to prioritize “VVIP security” over public mobility, the political fallout in the city’s already volatile landscape seems inevitable.

The barricades remain in place tonight, and with no official timeline for their removal, thousands of residents face another morning of uncertainty on the roads.
