The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has integrated an appointment booking feature into its Pak ID mobile application, aiming to slash wait times at registration centers across Pakistan.

Citizens can now schedule visits for ID card renewals, modifications, and new registrations directly from their smartphones. The move is a clear attempt to move away from the chaotic, hours-long queues that have long defined the NADRA center experience.

“We are digitizing the physical experience,” a senior NADRA official said, noting that the update was pushed live following a pilot phase in select metropolitan centers.

The process is straightforward. Once logged into the Pak ID app, users select the ‘Appointment’ module, choose their nearest center, and pick a time slot. The app generates a QR code that serves as a digital token, allowing users to bypass the traditional walk-in ticketing system.

It’s a necessary pivot. Last year, the authority processed millions of applications, with centers in major cities like Karachi and Lahore often struggling to manage the daily footfall. Critics have long argued that the digital-first approach for ID issuance was incomplete as long as the final verification and biometric stages remained tethered to overcrowded physical offices.

The app update also includes a real-time status tracker, allowing applicants to see if their chosen center is currently experiencing high traffic before they leave home.

Whether this reduces the actual workload on center staff remains the primary test. For now, it puts the onus on the user to manage their time. If the system holds up under peak demand, it could signal the end of the “early morning queue” culture that has plagued the authority for decades.

Applicants should ensure their app is updated to the latest version via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to access the new feature.
