DUBLIN, October 14, 2026: Growing concerns over artificial intelligence security dominated an industry summit in Dublin on Wednesday, as technology leaders called for stronger safeguards and regulation to prevent potentially serious incidents.

Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis warned that recent security incidents involving AI systems were “early warning shots.” He said the consequences could become more serious over the coming years unless technology companies and governments strengthen security measures.

One major concern is the possibility of AI worms — systems that could copy themselves and spread from one internet-connected device to another. Anthropic has warned that advances in AI could make this kind of self-replication increasingly possible, potentially affecting household devices, businesses and wider networks.

Microsoft President Brad Smith called for effective safety standards, mandatory reporting of significant incidents and emergency “safety brakes” that could help users stop AI systems when something goes wrong.

European Union technology chief Henna Virkkunen also urged AI companies to invest more time and resources in testing their systems. Meanwhile, OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar stressed that safety measures should be balanced against the need to continue innovation.

The discussion highlights growing pressure on the AI industry to ensure that increasingly capable systems remain secure, controllable and accountable.
