Pakistan to assess any Yemen request for military support, says DG ISPR
Director General ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry discusses Pakistan’s defence commitments and regional security during an interview with Independent Arabia.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan would evaluate any request from Yemen for military assistance, but the country’s military spokesperson said he was not aware of any formal appeal having been made. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry made the remarks during an interview with Independent Arabia, as fighting involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi-backed forces heightens regional tensions.

Responding to a question about possible assistance to Yemen’s internationally recognised government, Chaudhry said any request would be assessed by Pakistan’s government before a response was decided. He also warned that the collective deterrence mechanism under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could come into play if diplomatic efforts failed and the regional crisis escalated into a wider military confrontation.

Chaudhry said protecting Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security remained a priority for Pakistan. He also stressed the importance of safeguarding Islam’s two holiest sites in Makkah and Madinah. The agreement, signed by the three countries on August 7, establishes a framework for collective defence, under which an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.

The ISPR chief described the arrangement as defensive in nature and called for regional disputes to be resolved through dialogue to prevent further escalation. His remarks come amid renewed fighting in Yemen and Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, raising concerns over regional stability and security along key maritime routes.
