Is Putin’s Waiting Game Working?

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be relying on a strategy of patience in the ongoing war against Ukraine, hoping that time may gradually strengthen Moscow’s position. As the conflict continues, Russia is betting that prolonged fighting, economic pressures and political divisions among Western countries could eventually weaken international support for Kyiv.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the war has developed into a prolonged struggle with serious military, economic and humanitarian consequences. Russian forces have continued operations against Ukrainian positions and infrastructure, while Ukraine has maintained its resistance with support from Western countries.

One of the main factors influencing the conflict is the level of military and financial assistance provided to Ukraine by the United States and European nations. Moscow may expect that political disagreements, competing economic priorities and public fatigue over the war will gradually reduce this support. If that happens, Ukraine could face greater difficulties maintaining its defence capabilities.

However, Putin’s strategy also carries considerable risks. Russia must continue financing its military operations while dealing with international sanctions, economic pressures and the costs of a prolonged conflict. Sustaining the war over an extended period could place additional pressure on the country’s budget, workforce and civilian economy.

Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to defend its territory and seek international assistance. Its ability to resist Russian pressure will depend on military supplies, manpower, domestic production and the continued commitment of its international partners. The conflict remains unpredictable, and neither side has secured all its objectives.

Diplomatic efforts to end the war have continued, but major disagreements remain over territorial control, security guarantees and the conditions for a lasting peace agreement. These unresolved issues make it difficult to predict when the fighting might end.

Putin’s waiting game could benefit Russia if Western support for Ukraine declines and Moscow manages to maintain its military pressure. However, time alone does not guarantee success, particularly when both sides face substantial economic and military costs.

For now, it remains uncertain whether Russia’s strategy will deliver the outcome Putin seeks. The future of the war will depend on developments on the battlefield, the durability of international support for Ukraine, Russia’s economic resilience and the willingness of both sides to pursue a negotiated settlement.
