Saudi Arabia Revolutionizes Haj Experience with AI-Powered Multilingual Communication
Saudi Arabia is transforming the Haj experience with cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools designed to break language barriers, enhance safety, and deepen spiritual connection for more than two million pilgrims from over 180 countries.
Real-time translation now plays a pivotal role in managing what is arguably the largest gathering of people on Earth. AI-powered tools enable instant communication in dozens of languages, crucial during medical emergencies, crowd control, and everyday interactions.
At the heart of these innovations is the Saudi Ministry for Haj and Umrah’s commitment to inclusivity. During this year’s Arafat sermon — a central and deeply spiritual moment of Haj — AI systems translated the message live into 35 languages, making it accessible to all pilgrims and millions watching globally. According to the ministry, this initiative demonstrates how “technology and tradition can harmonise to elevate the spiritual experience.”
Voice-enabled robots like Manara, offering religious guidance in 11 languages, and AI-powered field devices that interpret both speech and images, allow for seamless communication across cultural and linguistic divides. These technologies foster a sense of inclusion and ensure pilgrims feel supported every step of the way.
Digital platforms such as the Nusuk App enhance the pilgrimage journey with features like an AI personal assistant offering real-time voice translations, route guidance, and answers to frequently asked questions in the user’s native language.
Programs like ‘Smart Haj’ and ‘In Their Languages’ further support multilingual engagement, ensuring that pilgrims can participate in rituals with clarity and confidence. Even sacred texts, including translated versions of the Holy Quran, are distributed widely throughout the Grand Mosque, allowing pilgrims to spiritually connect in their own languages.
This comprehensive communication strategy also extends to health and safety. The 937 Health Call Centre, launched by the Saudi Health Ministry, offers 24/7 multilingual medical support, including in Urdu. A new health awareness kit was also introduced to safeguard pilgrims’ well-being during their journey.
By integrating advanced AI into every facet of Haj, Saudi Arabia is not only addressing logistical challenges but also enriching the emotional and spiritual dimensions of the pilgrimage. As the ministry states, “Translation is not simply a technical feature—it is a spiritual bridge.”
Through this thoughtful blend of innovation and tradition, the Haj is becoming more inclusive, connected, and spiritually engaging than ever before — setting a global benchmark for how technology can serve faith.
