Former South African star AB de Villiers has sparked excitement among cricket fans after hinting at a potential return to the Indian Premier League (IPL). While the legendary batter ruled out a comeback as a player, he suggested he could take on a new role—most likely as a coach or mentor—with his beloved franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Speaking about the possibility, de Villiers said he would only ever associate with RCB if he returned to the league:
“My heart is with RCB and always will be. So, if the franchise feels there’s a role for me, when my time is right and ready, it will definitely be RCB.”
De Villiers, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2021, remains one of the most iconic players in IPL history. From 2011 to 2021, he represented RCB in 157 matches, scoring 4,522 runs at an average of 41.10 with a strike rate of 158.33. His heroics included two centuries, 37 half-centuries, and several memorable partnerships with Virat Kohli—most notably their record-breaking 229-run stand in 2016.
In total, de Villiers scored 5,162 runs in 184 IPL matches, leaving behind a legacy that earned him a place in RCB’s Hall of Fame in 2022.
Though a full-time professional commitment appears unlikely, fans are buzzing at the thought of “Mr. 360” returning in some capacity. His presence could provide not only tactical depth but also an emotional lift for the team as they look ahead to future seasons.
