A sharp blast of Arctic air has pushed much of the UK into wintry conditions, with an amber warning issued for the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds. Forecasters say these areas could see 15–25 cm of snow, especially on higher ground, raising the risk of serious travel disruption and brief whiteout conditions.

Yellow warnings are also in place across Northern Ireland, Scotland, south-west Wales, and parts of England, where icy roads and scattered snow showers have already caused problems. Dozens of schools have closed in Aberdeenshire, the Highlands, Moray, and several Welsh counties as local authorities struggle with unsafe conditions.

The cold snap has driven temperatures well below freezing, dipping to around –6°C in some locations overnight. With daytime highs barely reaching 2°C to 6°C, the Met Office says the chilly weather isn’t going anywhere just yet, and more snow could form quickly on untreated surfaces.

Health officials have also stepped in, with the UK Health Security Agency issuing a cold-health alert for parts of England. They’re urging people especially older adults and those with medical conditions to take extra care, stay warm, and keep an eye on anyone who might struggle in the harsh conditions.
