KARACHI: Veteran actor Asma Abbas has said that financially independent women who have already raised their children should not feel pressured to remarry later in life.

Speaking in an interview alongside her husband, Ghulam Abbas, Asma discussed remarriage among women over the age of 60 and stressed the importance of financial independence.

She said that remaining single later in life can sometimes allow women to avoid unnecessary household tensions while maintaining a peaceful and independent lifestyle.

Asma, who has been married to Ghulam Abbas for 35 years, also spoke about the importance of personal space within a marriage. She revealed that maintaining separate routines and having personal space, including separate rooms, had strengthened mutual respect between the couple.

Ghulam Abbas also shared details about his previous marriage and how his late first wife responded when he married Asma. He said his first wife moved to the United States to be closer to her support network and remained upset for around six months.

He recalled that when she eventually decided to return, he welcomed her back without hesitation. According to him, both women handled the situation with dignity and eventually developed a supportive relationship while living under the same roof.

Reflecting on the couple’s 35-year marriage, Ghulam Abbas said sincerity of purpose was the foundation of a lasting relationship. He emphasised transparency, honesty and allowing partners enough personal space to prevent resentment.

He also said that understanding and respecting a partner’s individuality becomes easier with time and maturity.

Ghulam Abbas stressed that honesty should never be compromised in a long-term relationship and advised younger couples to remain truthful regardless of circumstances.

The actor also reflected on his early possessiveness and admitted that he had initially been hesitant about allowing Asma to pursue acting as a full-time career.

Looking back, he said he felt embarrassed by his earlier attitude and described it as a misguided expression of male ego. He added that he had changed significantly over the past 35 years.

Asma Abbas is a veteran actor, television host and singer known for her performances in dramas including Ranjha Ranjha Kardi and Dumpukht. The couple are known for openly discussing marriage, trust, honesty and personal relationships.
