Australian Big Bash League (BBL) side Brisbane Heat have announced a unique tribute for Pakistan’s pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi, unveiling a dedicated stand named “Shaheen’s Fan Bay” at the Gabba for the upcoming season.
The exclusive seating zone will be open during all five of Brisbane Heat’s home fixtures—scheduled for December 19, December 27, January 2, January 10, and January 18. Fans purchasing tickets for the bay will get what the franchise describes as “the best seats in the house” to cheer on the left-arm quick in his debut BBL campaign.
The gesture highlights Afridi’s global popularity, particularly among South Asian cricket fans in Australia, and mirrors a recent move by Melbourne Stars, who introduced the “House of Rauf” at the MCG to celebrate fellow Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf.
Shaheen, one of the most feared new-ball bowlers in modern cricket, is set to bring extra firepower to Heat’s attack this season. His arrival has already sparked excitement among both local supporters and Pakistan’s diaspora community in Australia.
However, the development comes at an intriguing time. Just days ago, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suspended overseas NOCs for its centrally contracted players, creating uncertainty over participation in foreign leagues, including the BBL. While franchises remain optimistic about resolving the issue, the policy shift has left players like Shaheen in limbo.
Cricket analysts believe Brisbane Heat’s decision to dedicate a fan zone to Afridi reflects both his on-field impact and the marketing pull Pakistani stars bring to global leagues. If the PCB clears the way, the Gabba could witness a sea of teal and green backing one of Pakistan’s finest bowlers.
