Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has landed in trouble after making an inappropriate remark about South African captain Temba Bavuma during the Test match between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
While discussing the LBW appeal and subsequent review against Bavuma, Bumrah referred to him as a “dwarf,” a comment that has sparked controversy.
According to the renowned cricket website Wisden, Bumrah may have breached the ICC Code of Conduct.
The matter falls under Article 2.13, which pertains to the use of personal, insulting, offensive, or improper language directed at a player, official, or referee.
If found guilty, Bumrah could face serious consequences. Level 2 offences can carry a penalty of 50% to 100% of the match fee, along with a suspension of up to two matches.
However, the final decision depends entirely on the match referee’s interpretation. If the officials accept that Bumrah’s comment was made in reference to the height of the ball rather than Bavuma’s physical stature, he may receive some relief.
