Amid climate change, heavy rains and subsequent flooding, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over the increasing risk of a cholera outbreak due to stagnant water.
In response, Pakistan and the WHO have initiated the implementation of the National Cholera Control Plan 2025, with a target to reduce cholera-related deaths by 90% by the year 2030.
According to a report, over the past three and a half years, more than 400,000 people in Pakistan have been affected by cholera. The report further states that during the 2022 floods, more than 370,000 suspected cholera cases were reported. Between 2023 and 2025, Pakistan recorded over 21,000 suspected cases and 250 confirmed cases of the disease.
The plan is expected to play a vital role in preventing outbreaks of epidemics triggered by climate change.
