Cyclone Shakti Strengthens into Severe Storm Near Karachi

KARACHI (October 4, 2025) — The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that Cyclone Shakti has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the northeast Arabian Sea, posing potential risks to parts of Sindh and Balochistan’s coastal regions.

According to PMD’s latest advisory, the cyclone is currently located about 390 kilometers southwest of Karachi, moving slowly in a north-northwest direction. The system is generating sustained winds of 90–100 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 110 km/h around its center.

Sindh’s coastal districts — including Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Jamshoro, and Karachi — have been placed on alert as authorities warn of rough sea conditions, strong winds, and intermittent rainfall. The storm is also expected to bring moderate to heavy rains to parts of Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, and Kech districts in Balochistan.

The Met Office has forecast light to moderate showers with thunder in Karachi over the next 24 hours, while sea conditions along the coast are likely to remain rough to very rough between October 3 and 6.

PMD has strictly advised fishermen not to venture into the open sea until October 5, warning that high waves and strong currents could pose a serious threat to life and property.

The Makran coast, including Ormara and Pasni, is already witnessing high tides and strong gusts, resulting in damage to several anchored boats. Local authorities have begun evacuating small fishing settlements in vulnerable low-lying areas.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has directed provincial and district administrations to remain vigilant and ensure emergency response units are on standby.

Efforts are underway to secure coastal infrastructure, remove temporary stalls from beach areas, and warn local communities through loudspeakers and mobile alerts.

Residents in coastal towns have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during strong winds, and follow official updates issued by PMD and local authorities.

Karachi Not in Direct Path — But Risks Remain

While Karachi is not currently in the direct path of Cyclone Shakti, forecasters caution that the city could still experience strong gusts, rainfall, and rising tides due to the storm’s peripheral effects.

The situation is being closely monitored, with PMD expected to release updated advisories every six hours as the cyclone progresses over the Arabian Sea.
