Drama ‘Sher’ Sparks Outrage for Copying Bollywood’s Ram-Leela

The teaser for the much-anticipated Pakistani drama Sher, starring Danish Taimoor and Sarah Khan, has come under fire for allegedly copying scenes from the 2013 Bollywood film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. The controversy has sparked a wider conversation about originality and creative integrity within the Pakistani entertainment industry.

The criticism stems from a specific scene in the teaser, where Danish Taimoor’s character confronts Sarah Khan’s character with both pointing guns at each other in a tense standoff — a visual that mirrors a key moment from Ram-Leela, where Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh meet in a similar dramatic fashion.

Social Media Outrage

Soon after the teaser’s release, social media platforms were flooded with comparisons. Users posted side-by-side screenshots of Sher and Ram-Leela, highlighting the similarities in costume design, camera angles, and overall set aesthetics. “It’s disappointing to see such blatant copying,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter), while another called it “embarrassing and lazy filmmaking.”

Some netizens even referred to it as a “carbon copy” and questioned why an original production would risk creative credibility for borrowed visuals.

Lead Actress Responds

In an interview with Something Haute, Sarah Khan addressed the plagiarism allegations. She acknowledged the visual resemblance but denied any direct inspiration. “Yes, the teaser may remind people of something familiar, but the story of Sher is completely original,” she said. “We are telling a tale of honor, revenge, and tribal conflict that has its own roots.”

She further emphasized that teasers are just glimpses and should not be mistaken for full narratives.

Creative Team Under Pressure

The drama is written by Zanjabeel Asim Shah and directed by Aehsun Talish, both respected names in the industry. Neither has publicly commented on the plagiarism claims as of yet. Fans of the creators are hoping the actual storyline of the drama will offer something fresh, despite the initial backlash.

Media critics have weighed in as well, stating that while inspiration from other works is common in the entertainment world, copying entire scenes without adaptation crosses the line between homage and plagiarism.

Sher is expected to revolve around tribal politics, generational feuds, and the concept of love amidst violence — themes that are culturally rooted and often explored in South Asian dramas. This is the first on-screen pairing of Danish Taimoor and Sarah Khan, which had already generated significant buzz among fans before the controversy.

Despite the allegations, the teaser has generated millions of views, proving that controversy does sell — at least in the short term. Whether Sher will be able to stand on its own creatively remains to be seen when it premieres later this year. The production team has not yet announced an official release date.

Until then, the debate over originality in Pakistani media continues, reignited once again by a few seconds of familiar footage.
