Pakistani actor Durr-e-Fishan Saleem has strongly criticized Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab for what she called an “insensitive and dismissive” reply to a journalist’s emotional question about the recent death of a young boy, Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole in the city.
The incident — which sparked outrage across Karachi — resurfaced after a press conference clip went viral in which a journalist asked the mayor why the administration had failed to cover hazardous manholes, ultimately costing a child his life. Instead of addressing the concern, the mayor appeared visibly irritated, prompting widespread backlash online.
Reacting to the exchange, Durr-e-Fishan shared her frustration on social media, calling the mayor’s response deeply disappointing. She said that leaders must be able to face tough questions, especially when negligence results in the loss of innocent lives.
The actor stressed that holding authorities accountable is a democratic right, not an attack on governance. She added that silencing or belittling legitimate concerns only widens the gap between citizens and public officeholders.
Durr-e-Fishan also expressed worry for the journalist who raised the question, stating that individuals who speak truth to power often face pressure or intimidation. She urged civil society to stand with those who dare to question the system.
The death of young Ibrahim has reignited debate over Karachi’s infrastructure failures, with citizens demanding concrete action instead of political defensiveness. The city administration has yet to announce any major corrective steps.
